“Looks like I’m going to be writing about the PC-5 after all,” said Beanie, leaning on the pillows arranged against the headboard.

After baths and bedtime stories, the boys were in bed. Beanie looked forward to spending time with his wife, who had become more interested in jumping his bones since he’d apologized for asking her to facilitate a meeting between him and her father.

“What do you mean?” asked Noelle, crawling across the bed toward him. “Thought you were putting the cartel political story on hold?”

Beanie pulled her closer to him, into the crook of his arm, and kissed her forehead. “I met with Bob Davenport today. He claims the PC-5 killed Anna Zamora.”

“What?” Noelle moved her head to look at him. “That’s crazy.”

After giving his wife the details about the conversation with Bob, Beanie said, “Of course, he has no proof.”

“He might be telling the truth, though,” said Noelle.

“You think?”

“I never had anything to do with the protection tax,” said Noelle. “Taxes are about money, and anything that has to do with money is run by Brazos.”

“The financial arm of the cartel,” said Beanie, stroking his wife’s arm as he wondered where the conversation would lead.

“But I knew about the protection tax because …”

“Because?” Beanie prompted, though he wasn’t sure he wanted to know how Noelle knew about the gang’s protection racket.

His wife curled closer to him and said, “Because if you refuse to pay the protection tax, then someone from Vadaj would be sent to make you change your mind.”

Vadaj, Beanie knew, was the enforcement and security division of the cartel, solely responsible for causing physical harm, inflicting pain, and taking lives, including those on the dreaded Death List.

“My father started out as a convincer for Vadaj,” said Noelle. “His job was to convince you to pay the protection tax, which he did. Dad was very good at convincing people.”

Beanie stared at the palmetto-leaf ceiling fan swirling lazily overhead, thinking about the word, ‘convincing.’ An interesting euphemism for a beat down murder, he thought.

Noelle sighed. “Anyway, from what I know about protection, low-level guys—the street crew worker bees—will use it as a power move when they’re trying to move up in the cartel. They try to prove their worth by bringing in income. They come up with a scam and put it in play. If the scam is successful in generating lots of money, the bee might be sanctioned to continue the scam.”

“And then what would happen?” asked Beanie.

“If the scam continued to make money for the gang without any issues with law enforcement, then the low-level guy would be sanctioned to manage a small crew, and if his crew was successful with the scam, then the bee could be promoted to a supervisor.”

“What happens if he’s promoted?” asked Beanie, amazed at how the cartel functioned like a corporate entity.

“The bee could work his way up to a manager, and then, to a Director, which is the highest title or rank a non-family member can achieve, and it's a serious position,” said Noelle.
